Leadbeater's Possum

In The Kritic blog 27 March, 2012 I wrote about the Leadbeater’s possum. At the end of the blog I stated that I had emailed Tony Burke MP in support of Professor David Lindenmayer’s letter requesting the upgrade to the conservation status of the Leadbeater’s possum from endangered to critically endangered under federal bio diversity protection laws.

On Thursday, April 19, 2012 4:41 pm I received a response from Deb Callister of the Wildlife Branch in Mr Burke’s department.

The letter, from Ms Callister, advises that the public call for nominations closed on 22 March, 2012 and that the department now has 30 business days to provide nominations to the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC).

Ms Callister further advises that although nominations have closed Professor Lindenmayer’s letter will be included in the nominations despite the letter not conforming to the “usual requirements of a nomination”.

Noted in the letter is “that as the Leadbeater’s possum is already listed as a national threatened species under the EPBC Act, it already receives legislative protection under national environment law”.

The Kritic will make further enquiries as to when an outcome from the TSSC can be expected.

See attached PDF for a copy of the letter received from Ms Callister.
