What does it take to be someone’s hero?

According to Merriam-Webster when I look up “Hero” I get the following:

Definition of HERO

1.

a : a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability
b : an illustrious warrior
c : a person admired for their achievements and noble qualities
d : one who shows great courage

Admiring a person for their achievements and noble qualities – I like that. In doing so it must also be said that they are inspirational, at least to the admirer.

Miranda Gibson

Currently my hero is Miranda Gibson(B.A. B.Ed) Not only is she inspiring, her achievements are outstanding in the community, nationally and internationally.  Her most endearing quality is her modesty about her achievements.

Miranda is currently on her 66th Day on a platform situated 60m above the ground in an old-growth Eucalyptus Delegatensis tree, in the heart of Tasmania’s southern forests.

Why is she up there? Well Miranda, and thousands of others (The Kritic included), believe wholeheartedly in protecting the Native Forests of Tasmania.

In a recent post from her blog – Observer Tree (updated from the tree) Miranda responded to comments she received saying things such as “What you are doing is so amazing”  …. “your action will go down in history” …. “I wish I had the courage that you have”….. “I wish I could do what you do” …. “you are a true hero”.

Miranda posted…

“Please don’t think that I am something special, that I am living a life you couldn’t live, doing things you couldn’t do. Sure, maybe you aren’t able to climb up into these trees. But you can still speak up for these forests (and the other things that are important to you too). In what ever way that you can.”

“…So please, next time you think that I am a hero, remember that you are a hero too! Next time you feel glad that I’m up here defending the forests, remember that I am doing this WITH you. And that only together will we be able to make a difference.”

So as Miranda says “Be my hero!!!“. It doesn’t matter what environmental cause you choose to support it just matters that you choose to support the environment.

So let’s all get out there and be Environmental Heroes.
